Are you a Parkour/Freerunning newbie? Looking for information on getting started? Maybe you’ve seen some of the Parkour videos on YouTube or MTV and want to give things a try for yourself?
It’s natural to want to jump right in and see if you can do these moves too, but it’s very important that you take your parkour training seriously and systematically. You can’t do some of the more advanced moves before you’ve mastered the fundamentals.
Additionally, you need to realize that as your strength and skill improve, you’ll want to attempt more dangerous parkour maneuvers, and this is where the potential for injury can become much greater.
The first step is to get a pair of good running shoes, and start getting in shape. If you can’t pull yourself up a wall or run for more than one minute without getting winded, you’re going to struggle with parkour. This is a great way to improve your balance, coordination and physical fitness, but you need to realize that these things take time.
Look and see if there’s a local Parkour club in your city. Ask around some of the parkour forums and see what training is available in your area. It’s a good idea to go slowly and make sure your trainer knows what they’re doing. While you’re learning about the sport and being taught some of the basic moves, you should be running and doing basic exercises like push-ups, pull-ups and doing interval training to improve your cardiovascular fitness. As your strength and fitness improve, you’ll find that parkour is easier and much more enjoyable.
